Here’s my explanation as to why I’m aged 24 and not a registered voter.
I’ve observed 10 years of politicians lying to get votes.
I’ve seen 2 relatives join the same political party… spend time and energy and achieve nothing at all.
I’m sad to see that the ideals of the founding father of my country (yes, Mr Deputy Prime Minister, its *MY* country too, I was born here, you see) are being changed for the short-term, selfish benefit of some two-bit politicians who are trying to make a quick win.
I’m angry that most of my peers are being represented in the government by some person who is not even a young person… and is so out of touch… that I can’t even begin to explain it.
I’m not going to support a system where the head of a department is selected based on their actions 20 years ago.
I’m not going to support a system where the ruling party decides what to do, and the opposition has no say in it.
I’m not going to vote for MPs who make lewd jokes about their female counterparts and laugh it off.
This is *NOT* what my grandfather suffered for, and I really really don’t see the point.
When anyone with any kind of title becomes an arrogant waste of air in public, showing off his title.
When any member of a political party thinks the law doesn’t apply to him.
When the representatives of the people call each other animals in the Dewan Rakyat.
Even the man in the street doesn’t call his neighbour monkey, what more the MPs. When questioned, they evade and feign ignorance.
I prefer to abstain … thank you very much.

hullo jeyadev. i don’t think you know me personally; i’m sunflower’s l’il bro. hope you don’t mind me sharing my thoughts and responses to this post:
i agree with you. the system sucks. however, it’s almost impossible to tear it up and set up a whole new system (unless dissent is really widespread and the masses are ready to shed lots of blood, e.g. the french revolution). therefore, all we can do is do our best to make the lousy system work better.
does abstaining do anything? nope. and by not doing anything, it allows the situation to further deteriorate.
therefore, i do not agree with your stand. i think i should vote. vote for the opposition, so that there can be better check and balance. opposition will (probably) never gain power, and would (probably) be/become just as corrupt as the current govt if it did. but at least my vote may give them a stronger voice, to protest against the kind of things that you’re protesting against here.
i read somewhere that there are 4 million unregistered voters in malaysia. that’s a huge chunk of people. imagine if they casted their votes instead of choosing to abstain (like you) or just being too lazy to get off their butts and do something (probably the majority). it would definitely make a difference.
true anot? =)
@ blink : hmm… so we actively vote for the opposition. this would be the same opposition that has 8% in Parliament? the same opposition that is voted against, simply because they’re the opposition?
I’m all for the underdog, and if you’ve seen this style of protest to work, then I’m all for it. maybe sometime I can share my ideal dream with you and sunflower, hm?
i guess i believe in the CHiQ’s definition. Define politics?
poli = many, tics = small blood sucking creatures. politics = many small blood-sucking creatures. :)
Haha my friend…. I knew a person who once said ” A soldier has the advantage of looking the enemy in the eye!” Clearly politicians have a 4 year shelf-life or maybe 5 if the parliament decides so. I kinda feel this voting business is like the devil and the deep blue sea or rather ” Paksi Setan vs paksi kejahatan!” hah……
Clearly voting for the government states that you submit to their authority however the opposition also dosen’t do anything great other than rebutting what the government says. Surely these buch of ppl needs a lesson in humility. That they were placed up there to serve others and not for their own gain.
Unless they do so, I might as well take a “I don’t give a damn stance!” And what’s this stuff bout not letting members to vote according to their conscience. this a absurd. Think bout the logic. Not whatever your fellow teammate says is right.
But the one that takes the cake is my personal experience with a well known politician. It was a calm evening, i was busy rushing my assignments and then suddenly hearing ppl knocking at my gate. I was kinda reluctanct to check it out as they maybe door-to-door sales ppl. Finally after persistantly knocking for 2 mins, i decided to chack out what all these ruckus was about. As i was looking out my window, a rather elderly looking man requested that i stepped outside to greet YB ******. I went out reluctantly and stood there waitng for 5 mins. Then YB ****** approached and all he said to me was ” Tell your dad ha…. remember to tell him ya!” as he walked away. I literally gave him the “whatever” look as he scurried away.
What ran through my mind was how could he be so disrespectful to a person who will be aleigible to vote within a years time. So think bout it before you cast your votes, As Val says ” Many small blood sucking creatures!” Ride on Val….
